As part of the Centuries Festival 2025, Aarhus Sinfonietta invites you to an engaging and thought-provoking musical experience: Note of the Between. With the Hardanger fiddle at its core, we embark on an artistic journey that explores boundaries – physical, cultural, and musical. The audience will be treated to the world premiere of Aya Yoshida’s gjálfr-marr (Wave-Horse), specially composed for Aarhus Sinfonietta and violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan.

A Symbol of Breaking Boundaries

Boundaries come in many forms. Some divide nations through traditions, ethnicity, and history, while others connect us through shared stories and experiences. Boundaries can also create divisions and unnecessary separations. But what happens when we break these boundaries – or look at them in a new light?

The Hardanger fiddle symbolizes this exploration. It belongs to the string family, but its roots in Norwegian folk music give it a unique character – an instrument that bridges tradition and innovation.

On this evening, Aarhus Sinfonietta invites the audience to cross cultural boundaries, with the Hardanger fiddle serving as a musical guide. Through the concert’s program, we will explore the distinctive sounds of different countries – the poetry, the emotions, and the people who give each place its unique soul.

The evening begins with a lecture and talk between philosopher Søren Schauser and violinist Sofie Thorsbro Dan, who will share the fascinating history and development of the Hardanger fiddle along with musical examples. You’ll gain insight into its role in British, Central European, and Nordic music cultures. Following this, Aya Yoshida’s gjálfr-marr will be performed, where the traditional Hardanger fiddle meets contemporary composition in a boundary-breaking fusion.
